Say Hello To Jack...The Red Sea's Latest Turtle Sighting

Hello Jack!

This is Jack, a green-backed turtle spotted by our very own Jilly Healey, Circle Divers’ Course Director and Sharm el Sheikh Dive Centre manager.

Jack was spotted on Jack Fish Alley, Ras Mohammed, hence the name,  but also Jilly’s late father was called Jack so it seemed even more appropriate.  The photo was later sent to TurtleWatch Egypt 2.0 after a recent open evening event in Sharm El Shiekh.

TurtleWatch Egypt 2.0 is a Turtle conversation project aimed at collecting important information on endangered marine turtles in the Egyptian Red Sea. All the data contributed to the project can help improve our knowledge of these fascinating underwater creatures and be used towards improving their conservation.

How Can You Help Protect The Turtles of The Red Sea?

1.       Send Turtlewatch Egypt your photo or videos of any turtle sightings in the Red Sea. (turtlewatchegypt@gmail.com)

2.       Include any data you can, ie where it was seen, when it was seen, type of turtle if known etc…

3.       Share your sighting with our community via our website.

Be careful when photographing a turtle not to get too close or startle the turtle (no flash photography please!) Ideally, to identify the turtle correctly Turtlewatch need pictures of both the right and left facial profile along with any special feature or the whole carapace if you can manage.

Adopt A Turtle With TurtleWatch Egypt 2.0

Another way you can help with turtle conservation is to either donate to TurtleWatch Egypt via their website or by adopting a turtle. TurtleWatch Egypt 2.0 is affiliated to Marine Life Watch in Italy a registered non-profit association.

Adopting a turtle is the ideal way to join in the project for a long distance and also makes for a great unusual gift for marine-loving buddies. Turtle adoptions can significantly boost the work of organisations such as TurtleWatch Egypt 2.0 and can help in monitoring and protecting these wonderful creatures.
